Appalachia Service Project (ASP)

Youth Mission Trip – 2012

“A Completely Life Changing Experience”

Morristown U.M.C. is very proud to be serving its 26th year with ASP. We will have a group of 38 youth and adults in West Liberty, Kentucky from July 7-15th. ASP is a Christian based mission project that serves the Appalachian mountain areas of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Its mission is to make homes “Warmer, Safer, and Drier” in the region, and to demonstrate that we ALL are brothers and sisters in Christ. The Appalachia region of the United States has long been known to have one of the highest rates of population living below the poverty line in the country!

ASP operates 3 full time year around centers, but its main focus is on its High School youth program which runs for 8 weeks during the Summer at 30 different locations throughout the region. It is this time period that a majority of the almost 14,000 volunteers serve on a 1 week mission trip. ASP provides the lodging (school buildings), 3 meals a day, staff, job sites, materials, and group programming. All our group has to do is get there with our work tools and work teams. This year we will have 6 work teams. Work is varied and can be anything from roofing, framing, windows, doors, interior renovation, insulation, sheet rocking, painting, waterproofing, foundation work, decks, handicap ramps, drainage, just to some of the possibilities.
ASP is more than a building program though, it's a relationship ministry. Participants will spend time interacting with the family they've been assigned to serve, as well as their own groups and other groups staying at the same center. They'll forge friendships that will impact them for the rest of their lives, and they'll learn lessons that will enrich their faith and build character for the rest of their lives.
Armed with a new heart for Christian service, they will begin to give back to their own families, church and community. For many, this experience is the first step towards a lifelong vocation of caring for others.
We are always looking for new volunteers for this project, No experience is needed, just a willingness to serve! ASP also offers opportunities for college and adult groups throughout the year at one of their full time facilities. For more information, check out the ASP website at www.asphome.org
